A Foldable Way
July, 2021
Thank you to all the architects and designers who responded to our call for images of your current homework set-up with descriptions of your ideal home workspace. We much enjoyed getting a glimpse of your realities, and your fantasies.
Some of your home workspaces did not need much improving, like one open-air home office in northern Norway with an unbeatable fjord view, where sunglasses are required at 11pm in the summer. For offices that required more ergonomic space, better light and the possibility of creating a division between work and domestic activities, you suggested some ingenious ideas. You created flexible spaces with curtains and fold-away furniture; one entry included a mirror hung inside a wardrobe workspace to provide a desk-view of the window behind.
Congratulations to Mustafa Afsaroglu of Taner’s Sons Design Studio whose entry we have selected as the winner. Mustafa’s sculptural unit unfurls to provide a desk and plenty of storage, but can be elegantly folded away when not in use. The unit is made from Kvadrat’s Really Solid Textile Board, which gives the fold-away desk a warmth and tactility suitable for a domestic space and ensures its presence doesn’t remind Mustafa too much of work after his day is done.
