Hallingdal 65

Hallingdal was designed by Nanna Ditzel in 1965. Since when it has become as famous for its durability as for its rich colour palette. Today more than forty-five years later it remains one of Kvadrat’s best-selling products and has earned its place as a design classic. A familiar fixture in public spaces, hospitals, schools and homes, Hallingdal 65 is a textile that holds many associations for many people.

Much of Hallingdal’s endurance of course has to do with its physical properties. However, it is the flexibility of this textile that gives it its real staying power because it is the designers and architects who choose it for their works who enable its capacity for continuous reinvention.

In a celebration of Hallingdal 65’s longevity, at a time when that quality seems rarer than ever, Kvadrat has invited a new generation of designers to create entirely new works using the textile and explore new applications for the fabric.

We are truly grateful to all who have taken part in this project. In particular to Patrizia Moroso & Giulio Ridolfo, under whose guidance our seven esteemed curators around the world have nominated their pick of emerging design talents. Set out over the following pages, are the studios that represent the very best of their region and the most exciting new directions. Hailing from the UK, Europe, the US, Scandinavia and Asia these designers have applied their skills to a very open brief - their only restriction to use Hallingdal 65 as the starting point for their idea. The result is 32 new concepts that take Hallingdal’s impressive past and show the way forward to an inspiring and innovative future.
