TRUNK | YOY

We, YOY, have several design themes and one of them is ‘fictionality’.

Firstly, we thought of the function of clothes and decided to focus on clothes as a cover. So we started thinking about generating fiction with the cover of something and surface of Canvas. Then the idea came to our mind: a cylindrical stool covered in Canvas but with the texture of tree bark. We thought it should look like a trunk. So we named it TRUNK.

To make it, we produced a mould of bark texture by 3D scanning a real trunk. By pressing the textile within the mould we added the texture to Kvadrat’s Canvas. We used the trunk of an alder tree because it’s bark has a nice, clear texture. We made three sizes of prototypes for the exhibition.

YOY is a Tokyo-based design studio founded in 2011 by Naoki Ono (Japan, 1981) and Yuki Yamamoto (Japan, 1985). They set ‘fictionality’ as their design theme, and design furniture, lighting and interior spaces. Designs such as their CANVAS chair, SCRIBBLE coaster, LIGHT lamp and BLOW shelves have been sold all over the world and their work is featured in the MoMA Design Store in New York. YOY have received numerous awards including a Red Dot Award for Product Design, an NYC x DESIGN Award, the Elle Decor Japan Young Japanese Design Talent, First Prize at the SDA Award, and a special mention at the Salone Satellite Award, Milan. Ono and Yamamoto have both held part-time lectureships at Musashino Art University since 2015.
