The Hourglass in Amsterdam creates a new blueprint for law firms by balancing the compact spaces required for confidential work with atmospheric, subtly refined social zones. The sculptural, sustainably designed building integrates a constellation of Kvadrat textiles and curtains, as well as a Kvadrat Acoustics solution.
At the light-filled venue the textiles are used on diverse custom and vintage furniture - chosen in the interests of sustainability - from an array of leading brands. They are also applied to different wall panels and a pinboard integrated into a partition wall.
Staff and visitors encounter the textiles throughout the building, from the more neutral work areas and booths to the more luxurious communal areas, which recall high-end hotels. Specifically, they contribute to the experience of the entrance, office floors, boardroom, event bar, coffee corner and restaurant, and 17th floor, and 18th floor.
The architects specified the upholsteries Harald, Hero, Fiord, Memory, and Sunniva in a scale of colours. They also chose the curtain Air, used in the boardroom and on the 17th floor, and Frost which hangs on the 18th floor and the event bar.
A Kvadrat Acoustics solution in the expansive meeting room on the 18th floor, adds a further dimension of detailing and materiality while supporting the essential ability to conduct confidential, productive conversations.
Sandra Brus Pyłczewska, Project Leader, Architect: “We opted for Kvadrat because of the high quality and the large range of choices. Communication is always easy, and the service is good."
The Hourglass, shaped as the name suggests like an hourglass, is inspired by the Romanian sculptor Constantin Brâncuși. It is BREEAM Excellent certified and integrates materials from various sustainable sources. The building, which also includes an high-end apartment hotel and a restaurant, is also heated and cooled using fully sustainable methods.
