Upholstery textile: Galla 550

The Royal Playhouse

Project
Specially designed Kvadrat textiles have been chosen for the seating in one of Denmark’s most acclaimed auditoriums, the ‘Store Sal’ in The Royal Playhouse. The building’s design echoes the materials of the harbour it overlooks: it features rustic brickwork and a copper-clad tower. Certain key design elements were specially created for the project, including the dark elongated bricks used throughout the building and the unique red colour of the Kvadrat fabric.

Solution
Galla 550 was developed in a special red colour for the project. 1,200 metres of the fabric was ordered, which has been used to upholster the 650 chairs in the auditorium and create a large matching curtain.

The chairs’ smooth shapes demand the highest standards from upholstery fabric, which has to be ductile and cling to the form of the furniture. Kvadrat’s Galla was the perfect solution. Due to its short, dense pile, it forms precisely around the chairs’ curves. Furthermore, the incredible intensity of the colour of the velour gives it a particularly festive and solemn look. Kvadrat has been an extraordinarily good partner: throughout the development stage they were consistently very helpful in providing samples’, Signe Baadsgaard, Architect MAA, Lundgaard & Tranberg Architects
