Octopoda by Patricia Urquiola
Patricia Urquiola’s installation makes use of Sport, the innovative textile she designed for Kvadrat. Crafted entirely from ocean-bound plastic waste found off the coastline and islands of Thailand, Sport is the world's first recycled polyester upholstery textile woven from discarded plastic collected from the ocean.
Inspired by the marine environment and the vibrant colours of the sea, Urquiola has created a larger-than-life octopus-like piece using different shades of Sport, the vibrant colours of the textile reflecting the rich variety of life found in the depths of the ocean. It is perhaps significant that Urquiola has channelled the octopus in her installation: a remarkable creature held in special affection by many – and an animal about which, like the ocean itself, much remains to be discovered.
