Gothenburg Concert Hall
AIX Arkitekter AB
Nordic functionalism, soft velours and vivid tones
The Swedish architectural firm AIX Arkitekter has tastefully refurbished the two concert halls in Gothenburg Concert Hall using the upholstery textile Star; an interpretation of a classic velour upholstery fabric with a contemporary twist.
Following an intensive collaboration, involving numerous colour tests, Star was chosen for its ability to lift the chairs and interact with the architecture, the natural materials and intarsia decorations.
For the impressive main hall 'Store Salen' a custom red was chosen, and for the smaller, more intimate hall 'Stenhammarsalen' a blue was selected. The two concert halls comprise a total of 1646 seats.
Gothenburg Concert Hall, home to Sweden’s National Orchestra, is regarded as one of the most important monuments of Nordic functionalism.
