Dunhuangwu Stool by Peng Wenhui

Commissioned by Kvadrat and designed by Peng Wenhui with Dunhuang-related elements, The Dunhuangwu Stool is a modern interpretation of the classic Mazha.

Its frame is made of our upholstery textile Memory. The colours are drawn from the Dunhuang murals, specifically the three hues of red, black, and green. The combination of textile, metal, wood, and silicone in the reconstruction of Dunhuang elements is intended to emphasize the cultural significance of incorporating traditional elements into modern designs.

The textile of the Dunhuang stool is reminiscent of Western Region carpets, while also featuring Chinese-style freehand patterns and weaving techniques. From a distance, its irregular texture resembles the sparsely-distributed vegetation in the desert, giving it a distinctly natural quality. The combination of fabric, metal, wood, and silicone in the reconstruction of Dunhuang elements is intended to emphasize the cultural significance of incorporating traditional elements into modern designs.

Together with “Chuanxi”, Dunhuangwu Stool will be shown for the first time during 2023 Design Shanghai.
