Kvadrat curtains have been chosen to add colour and differentiate between rooms in the Tietgen Dormitory, in Copenhagen. The building’s circular form, which symbolises equality and the communal, is contrasted by projecting volumes expressing the individual residences. These individual apartments are set at differing depths in an alternating rhythm, whilst the communal spaces protrude out over the middle of a courtyard.
Curtains made from approximately 5000 metres of the textile Florentijn, in 8 specially developed colourways. They form a series of vertically divided expanses of colour, individualising different rooms and forming part of the rhythm of the frontage. In total, the curtains feature in 360 rooms, which cater up to 400 students.
‘Because the project included a major order of curtain fabric, Kvadrat was prepared to produce a colour scheme especially for the Tietgen Dormitory. This made it possible to make the curtains a functional and aesthetic experience at close hand, and at the same time, be part of the bigger picture when viewing the façade. In this way, they work on an individual level and with the architecture in general. Importantly, Kvadrat chose to get deeply engaged in the project, ensuring the best possible supplier / designer solution’, Julie Henriksen, Aggebo & Henriksen.
